Besides promoting individual excellence in the form of GRC fellowships and promoting of key academic areas which go along with the GRC fellowships, the GRC also directly develops perspectives for the academic direction of the Johannes Gutenberg University for the next 5 to 10 years and develops proposals to be actualized. For example, the Executive Committee of the GRC advises the departments, the Senate or the university administration, when asked, for the reorientation of available professorships or for the restructuring of the institutes. The GRC advises the installation of only a few professorships; standard installations are not advised by the GRC. Because of the interdisciplinary orientation which is planned to be comprehensive at the institutional and departmental level, the advice of the GRC is usually of decisive importance. Thus the GRC, for example has decisively contributed to the profiling process in the context of the "Forschungsinitiative Rheinland-Pfalz 2008-11" and its follow-up, the "Forschungsinitiative Rheinland-Pfalz 2014-16". The GRC has also played an important role in the preparation of the second phase of the Excellence Initiative of the federal and state government.
